New York Central 'late' J3a Sample Number 3

The side compartment on the fireman's side has a lift-off hatch that exposes the stoker engine used to power the auger in the coal bunker.  As on the prototype, the hatch is a lift-off and not hinged.  This close-up also shows the equalized suspension used on the pedestal wheel sets, the leaf springs are fabricated leafs and not castings.
